5 Myths and Facts about ADHD

5 Myths and Facts about ADHD

There are a lot of misconceptions regarding ADHD. Because of these misconceptions, those who have been diagnosed with the disorder are often judged and unfairly labeled as lazy.

Myth 1: ADHD is not a real medical condition

Fact: ADHD is in fact a medical condition. It has been recognized by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the American Psychiatric Association as a medical condition. Through brain images studies, researchers have been able to identify differences in brain development between children who have been diagnosed with ADHD and children who have not.

Myth 2: ADHD kids just need to try harder to pay attention

Fact: Children who have been diagnosed with ADHD do try hard to pay attention, sometimes even harder than those who are not diagnosed. Children with ADHD have differences in their neural networks in their brain that take longer to develop or may not work as efficiently.

Myth 3: Only boys have ADHD

Fact: While it is true boys are twice as more likely to be diagnosed than girls, girls can be diagnosed as well. Often times, because girls with ADHD have less difficulty with impulse control and hyperactivity, they may be overlooked for the diagnose. Girls with ADHD may appear more “day dreamy” in their attention deficits.

Myth 4: Medication is the only way to treat ADHD

Fact: Medication is effective for about 80% of children but it is not the only treatment. Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) are also great treatments.

Myth 5: Kids with ADHD outgrow the disorder

Fact: While some symptoms may lessen or disappear as children get older, they don’t necessarily outgrow the disorder entirely. Symptoms may change and children may learn efficient ways to cope with their symptoms but that is not the same as out growing the disorder.
