ADHD During the School Year: A Guide for Parents and Teachers

When the school year hits, parents with children diagnosed with ADHD may worry about how this specific school season will go. Interestingly, most teachers wonder the same. So, here are a few tips to manage ADHD during the school year and help your children succeed.

Tip #1: Establish Routines.

For parents, this means having a set morning and after-school routine that you rarely sway from. Consistent routines can help children with ADHD understand expectations and manage their time effectively.

Teachers can further bring routine into the classroom, including at the start of the day, recess, lunch, and finishing off the day.

Tip #2: Provide Clear Instructions.

Both parents and teachers alike can benefit from this tip. And it doesn’t just apply to children with ADHD. It can be beneficial for guiding children of all ages.

Basically, we want to give clear, concise instructions and check for understanding. Instead of: “Stand in a line,” say: “Stand in a line along the bookcases, facing me, please.”

Tip #3: Use Positive Reinforcement.

Most of us don’t respond well to negative critique. And it can be confusing always to be told when you’re doing something wrong rather than when you do something right.

So, this is a friendly reminder to reinforce desirable behaviors with praise, encouragement, and rewards. That positivity goes a long way!

Tip #4: Encourage Physical Activity.

Incorporate movement and physical activity into the school day to help students with ADHD expend energy and refocus. This can also be an active way to engage all students and help them learn. Whenever possible, try to get your students or children moving! Research shows the undeniable benefits of doing so.

Tip #5: Collaborate.

Parents and teachers should have an open line of communication. This can ensure that strategies match up and that each child is supported in the best way possible.
