Anxiety on the Rise in Teens

Everyone will experience anxiety at some point in their lives whether it is anxiety regarding a test, making an important life decision and other varying reasons. Usually the anxious feelings do not last, but for others the anxious feelings may be long lasting and will often times interfere with everyday life.

Does your teen show signs of anxiety? Anxiety in teens has been on the rise for years. What is the cause for this increase? There is still no direct reason, however, there have been a lot of speculations. Of course genetics, brain chemistry, life events and personality play a role, but there are more thoughts as to why anxiety has been increasing. Today, teens feel increased pressure with having to do well on standardized tests in today’s culture of achievement. In addition, to many teens, the world is beginning to feel like a “scary place.” With the increased numbers of shootings, whether in school or other public places, teens are beginning to feel unsafe. Social media is another potential contributor to anxiety. Teens want to stay connected to their friends and latest trends. On social media, everyone attempts to portray the best version of themselves, and as humans, we big to judge ourselves.

Chronic anxiety can have life long lasting effects causing depression, substance use disorders, and even suicide. Anxiety can interfere with focus and begin to cause problems in school. Anxiety is not just feeling anxious or worried, but other physical symptoms such as headaches, chronic pain, digestive issues and later on can even cause heart disease.
