How Do Concussions impact young athletes with ADHD?

How Do Concussions impact young athletes with ADHD?

A preliminary study indicates that those with ADHD who have suffered concussions are at a higher risk of developing depression and anxiety.  The more immediate symptoms of concussions include a headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and confusion. Typically, they improve within a few days, according to the CDC. But for some people, recovery may take weeks or months.

This preliminary study found those with ADHD and a history of concussion scored higher on measures of depression and anxiety compared to those without ADHD who experienced concussions.

This study is a starting point in trying to understand the relationship between concussions and ADHD. Longitudinal studies, which would study the athletes over time, would be very helpful in assessing the long-term consequences.

The Takeaway

It is important to note that the study findings don’t prove a cause-and-effect relationship. It’s also too early to know whether athletes with ADHD should take any specific action to manage a concussion. The participant’s symptoms did not hit the range necessary for a diagnosis of major depression or clinical anxiety.

It is also possible athletes with ADHD would be vulnerable to experiencing higher rates of depression and anxiety because of painful external influences such as being sidelined during due to recovery and falling behind on schoolwork.

This doesn’t mean that if you sustain a concussion, you will have long-term depression or anxiety but you should pay close attention to your recovery.  It is important to have a full mental-health evaluation and a follow-up.
